5. The Roses
Warren Adler's classic relationship novel The War of the Roses was previously adapted into a 1989 Danny DeVito-directed film starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner which was not only a box office smash but snagged itself three Golden Globe nominations, for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Douglas), and Best Actress (Turner).
The original adaptation remains beloved enough that it was tough to muster much excitement when a new take starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman was first announced.
Much as we love Cumberbatch and Colman, they're not much of a match for Douglas and Turner at the peak of their powers, but the flip side of this is that it allowed director Jay Roach to at least reinterpret the original text in a same-but-different way.
This remake thankfully retains the sharp black comedy of its predecessor even while some of the finer details are different - namely, British protagonists instead of Americans - and while the world would've been just fine without its existence, The Roses carves enough of its own path to not feel like an especially cynical rehash.
