1. The Wedding Banquet
And finally we have another remake that surely wasn't on anyone's bingo card - a new take on Ang Lee's beloved 1993 rom-com The Wedding Banquet.
Lee's film was a major critical and commercial success, even receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film, but last year it was unexpectedly announced that a remake was in the works from on-the-rise filmmaker Andrew Ahn (Fire Island).
The original had such unassuming charm that the prospect of a broader remake with a more recognisable cast - led by Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran - didn't leave one with much hope, despite the talents of all involved.
Yet while a millennial take on the original material had sure cringe potential, the new Wedding Banquet actually acquits itself quite well.
For one, the cast are terrific, and it engages thoughtfully with how society's views on sexuality, immigration, and parenthood have all changed over the last three decades.
Yet despite scoring strong reviews, the remake largely came and went in a blink, and therefore clearly won't land a fraction of the original's cultural staying power.
