7. Pierce Brosnan's Miscasting - The Thursday Murder Club

Netflix's recent film adaptation of Richard Osman's hit murder mystery novel The Thursday Murder Club was generally well-received by critics who were perhaps less-familiar with the source material, though the general audience response was considerably more mixed.

One of the big issues that many fans of Osman's novel had was the casting of Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie.

Though Brosnan is a terrific actor who has slid quite nimbly into older age, few pegged him as a natural fit for this rough-around-the-edges former trade unionist.

Ever since the book was released, a popular fan-cast has been Ray Winstone, and to hammer the point home, even Brosnan himself admitted that he pictured Winstone as Ron while reading the script and wasn't really sure why he was offered the part.

Ultimately Brosnan gives a decent performance regardless but he never really convinces as Ron off the page, and considering how pitch perfect the movie's casting was otherwise, he can't help but stick out like a sore thumb.

It feels like Brosnan was cast more for his overwhelming popularity than because he was absolutely right for the role. And given that there's an entire series of books to adapt, we're presumably stuck with this casting choice now.
