5. That Unconvincing Twist - Relay
David Mackenzie's riveting new crime thriller Relay follows Ash (Riz Ahmed), a fixer who attempts to help a whistle-blower, Sarah Grant (Lily James), safely escape the clutches of the corporation she planned to expose.
For its first two acts Relay is a deliciously tight and engrossing espionage thriller for the modern age, but falls off hard in its final reel when the audience is asked to buy a plot twist that's a bit too silly for its own good.
After Sarah is kidnapped by operatives hired by the corporation, Ash races to rescue her, only for Sarah to taser him, revealing herself to actually be the leader of said operatives.
As it turns out, the events of the movie were actually part of an elaborate sting intended to trap Ash himself because of another deal he brokered between a whistle-blower and a company at the start of the film.
The company in question enlisted Sarah to cook up a fake whistle-blower plot, using herself as a honey trap to lure in Ash and find out his identity.
Though eagle-eyed viewers might actually figure out the twist ahead of time, that doesn't really make it any less ridiculous.
It strains credibility enough that it's ultimately tough to take the rest of the film seriously at all.
