4. Too Much CGI Gore - The Toxic Avenger
The new, long-delayed remake of Troma's trashy horror classic The Toxic Avenger was actually a pretty fun time for the most part, but it fell down in one key area - all that damn CGI gore.
Considering that the original 1984 film is packed with practical blood 'n' guts, it seemed like a given that this largely reverent love letter to that film would sing from the same hymn sheet.
But while there is some practical effects wizardry throughout the remake, there's also a massive reliance on digital gore, which just doesn't hit the same.
Presumably for budgetary or logistical reasons, the more elaborate kill scenes typically defer to distractingly video game-y gore effects, which rather than disgust audiences while leaving them marvelling at the amazing effects, end up feeling a bit empty.
All the forgettable CGI doesn't really feel like it fits the Troma ethos - a shame considering how well the movie nails the original film's schlock-happy vibe otherwise.
