20 Rotten Tomatoes Predictions For 2022's Biggest Movies

16. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (72%)

Buzz Lightyear
Paramount

One of the big critical surprises of recent years was 2020's Sonic The Hedgehog, which ended up scoring 63% with critics - a practically miraculous figure for video game movies.

Much of the credit was given to studio Paramount, who agreed to delay the film by several months to fix Sonic's design after fans complained about his nightmarish original humanoid-ish appearance.

Beyond that, it was a just a cute, fun movie that didn't take itself too seriously, delivered a ton of silly comic book-y action, and benefitted enormously from Jim Carrey's unhinged throwback performance as Dr. Robotnik.

The trailer for Sonic 2 has a lot of fans feeling weirdly optimistic that this could be a rare sequel - and ultra-rare video game movie sequel, even - to outdo its predecessor.

Between the inclusion of Tails (voiced by video game voice actor Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and introduction of Knuckles (Idris Elba), this looks like it should be a sequel both enormously entertaining and crucially reverent to the source.

It probably won't change the minds of too many people who were left unmoved by the original, but an uptick of around 10% seems plausible - 72% it is. Certified Fresh status (75% with at least 80 reviews) isn't out of the question, though.
