20 Sequels That Brilliantly Fixed Past Mistakes

17. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - The Tone Is Far Nicer

2018's Peter Rabbit was about as off-putting as family films get. As well as being a terrible adaptation of Beatrix Potter's beloved, wholesome stories, it was a nasty, mean-spirited and generally unfunny venture that was, above all else, dragged down by its obnoxious title character. Peter Rabbit (James Corden) was such a loathsome, cocky and bullying git that accompanying parents were probably crossing their fingers for him to be made into a rabbit pie.

That's why this follow-up was such a shock. Not only was it generally a major improvement, but the tonal issues with the first flick were completely excised. Gone was the ugliness of the first movie, and that was replaced with winning meta-comedy and a sweet, positive, and wholesome tone.

As for Peter Rabbit himself, he was no longer an utter wanker. He's so much more likable in this one, and Corden - who is talented with the right material, regardless of how poorly he might come across in real life - comes into the role and gives a better performance.

Quite frankly, it's a shame this movie couldn't have come out during 2020 because, against the odds, it was a cheering watch that we all could've used back then.
