20 Serial Killer Movies You Must See Before You Die
7. Zodiac (2007)
David Fincher has made two of the greatest serial killer movies of all-time, and this is one of them. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. (all of whom give some of their best ever screen performances), Zodiac tells the true story of the "Zodiac Killer" - a serial murderer who terrorised San Francisco in the 1970s. Zodiac is a deliberately slow and methodical film that relishes in scenes built around collecting information and carrying out research. As such, it's not a movie designed for audiences who get impatient quickly; you have to commit yourself to Zodiac, dark and occasionally laborious as it is, because that's what the real investigation was like. After all, the murderer was never caught... and yet Fincher's film still manages to grip and thrill. Disturbing and - at 158 minutes - rather epic in length, this is an underrated masterpiece that deserves to be considered amongst the greatest films in the genre.
