20 Sick Cannibal Movies You Need To See Before You Die
11. Ravenous
Blending elements of horror and black comedy with an excellent cast, Ravenous is definitely one of the most high quality movies about cannibalism you can find. It's far from the grungy, cheap feel of many exploitation films with this subject matter. In Ravenous, a Second Lieutenant in the Mexican American War named John Boyd (Guy Pierce) is exiled after a moment of cowardice during battle. He's sent to a remote fort in a mountain range, where a stranger recounts a story of being reduced to cannibalism while on a harsh journey. When looking for survivors, though, Boyd and his crew are told about the myth of the Wendigo, a demon in disguise as a man who hunts for human meat in order to gain strength. Could the stranger be this creature come to life? Ravenous is about a lot of interesting topics including the horrors of war and taking things you have no right to take. In some way, cannibalism becomes a metaphor for Manifest destiny, and this is probably the first and last time that metaphor will ever be made on film. The tone can be a bit all over the place when Antonia Bird mixes in the comedy, but overall Ravenous is a highly effective, gross film with something to say.
