20 Sick Cannibal Movies You Need To See Before You Die
18. Parents
In Parents, a more comedic take on the cannibal genre, a young boy named Michael begins to suspect his parents aren't exactly getting their meat from the local deli. He has a dream that they have bodies hanging on hooks in their basement, and he suspects this vision of his might be true. His guidance counsellor thinks Michael is going nuts, but then the two do indeed discover a corpse in his parents' house. Michael realizes his folks' terrible secret, and later, his father tries to serve him human meat for supper. Then again, he's probably been doing that for a while, and Michael is only now being made aware of what he has been eating all these years. Parents is a funny movie about being a kid and the world seeming so endlessly perplexing. Adults are confusing, you feel out of place, and you're unsure if you can even trust your own parents. The film also works as a metaphor for doubting authority figures in general, and the late '50s aesthetic gives it a nostalgic vibe. While making you laugh, Parents also forces you to confront the horror of having eaten humans for years without knowing it, all because you believed that your parents were sane. Maybe we sometimes put more trust in others than they deserve.
