20 Sports Documentaries You Must See Before You Die
6. The U
ESPN's incredible 30 for 30 series has always done an incredible job of finding a way to make anyone watching care about their documentaries, regardless of whether or not they follow the sport that is on the screen.
One of the prime examples of this is their documentary on the Miami Hurricanes college team, The U. Now unless you're from Florida, have connections there or follow college football, it's highly unlikely that you'd even be aware of the Hurricanes in any capacity. However, after watching this in-depth look at the incredible rise of one of the most amazing college programmes ever, it'll be near impossible to not root for The U.
Directed by the fantastic Billy Corben, the documentary follows the University of Miami football programme once Howard Schnellenberger takes charge of the team in the late 1970s and their incredible rise throughout the 1980s and 1990s. However, it's not all about glory, as the documentary also showcases the many off-field problems the players on the team had as well.
It's a fascinating look at a team that crossed racial lines, won titles and did it in an entertaining fashion too. While the players on the team were far from perfect, it's quite clear that when they were on the football field they performed like a well-oiled machine whose only goal was to win games. Even if you don't care about American football, you'll care about The U after this.
