20 Sports Documentaries You Must See Before You Die

18. The Birth Of Big Air

We've already discussed the rise of extreme sports on this list, but we'd be remiss to not mention Mat Hoffman and everything he brought to the sport with his BMX. Hoffman is an extreme sports legend who has helped establish BMX riding as a professional sport.

As amazing as his career has been, it's certainly come at a heavy price, which is what we see in his ESPN 30 for 30 flick, The Birth of Big Air. When your choice of sport involves you flying through the air and doing multiple flips in a row, there's always a strong element of danger that comes with it.

Despite this, Hoffman's insistence on breaking boundaries and proving that anything is possible when it comes to riding a BMX has broken his body a number of times in a variety of different ways. However, even though his body is a mess, the film's director, Jeff Tremaine, does a brilliant job of showing why his love of attempting tricks and jumps that others deemed possible helped make him into the incredible icon that he is today.
