20 Sports Documentaries You Must See Before You Die

17. Once Brothers

Even though sports can bring people from different countries and backgrounds together for one specific goal, there are plenty of things in the world that can tear these allegiances apart. In the case of Yugoslavian basketball players, Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic, the Yugoslav War is what ruined their relationship.

Divac, who is from Serbia, and Petrovic, who came from Croatia, played for the Yugoslavian national side during the late 80s, building up a strong friendship with each as both men made the trip to the NBA to further their careers outside of Europe. However, the escalating war between the two countries put a major strain on how they saw each other, with both men on opposing sides of the conflict.

The film follows the lives of both men, especially Divac, who had to deal with the aftermath of Petrovic's death and the fact that he was unable to reconcile with his friend and teammate before he passed away in a traffic accident in Germany.

Of course, this film is a celebration of two of the finest European exports to ever play in the NBA, but the deeper meaning of friendship and the small amount of time we have as humans to rectify situations is felt throughout.
