20 Terrible 2015 Movies That Should Never Have Happened
5. Area 51
The Plot: Three conspiracy theorists decide to investigate the infamous government facility known as Area 51, recording their efforts to sneak inside and uncover what's really being hidden from the public once and for all. Why It Shouldn't Exist: For one, Paranormal Activity writer-director Oren Peli started filming this found footage sci-fi horror back in 2009, then did reshoots in 2013, and spent two more years fixing it in post-production before releasing it quietly on VOD in 2015. It was clear by 2011 that the project was in trouble, and so it's pretty surprising it actually came out at all: many fans expected Peli to simply shelve Area 51 and move onto other things. Then there's the actual result itself, a bland, poorly-filmed debacle which suggests Peli may well just be a one-trick pony, and that it somehow cost $5 million is further proof that he likely doesn't know what he's doing. If Paramount had realised that sooner, they could've saved themselves some easy cash. Just let him make money off the Paranormal franchise and be done with him.
