From fairly early in the film, we see multiple scenes of the Narrator going to support meetings. It all starts with the initial one for men with testicular cancer that his doctor recommended. He becomes addicted to being able to cry, feeling the love and support from others – all of which allows him to sleep.
However, while he makes an active point of using different names at each of these events so that nothing can be traced back to him, the names he chooses as his aliases aren't random. In fact, for big film fanatics, they might’ve figured it out already. These scenes pay homage to Robert De Niro as each alias is the name of one of the characters who De Niro has played.
