20 Things You Didn’t Know About Casino Royale (2006)

17. A Very British Coup

Casino Royale Daniel Craig
MGM/Columbia Pictures

After the colourful and engaging titles sequence designed by Daniel Kleinman, the film opens with Mr White (Jesper Christensen) - who fronts a shadowy organisation that assists terrorists with their financing - introducing Lord’s Resistance Army leader, Steven Obanno (Isaach de Bankolé) to financier, Le Chiffre.

This scene is set in a forest in Mbale, Uganda where Obanno remains undercover with his forces, including children. However, it was actually filmed on a set built by production designer, Peter Lamont in Black Park, close to Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

The country park frequently features on the big and small screens, perhaps most memorably in numerous Hammer Horror movies, as part of the chase sequence between James Bond’s (Sir Sean Connery’s) Aston Martin DB5 and Auric Goldfinger’s (Gert Fröbe’s) men in Goldfinger (1964), and as the eerie approach road to the Batcave in Batman (1989).

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
