20 Things You Didn’t Know About Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
16. Ties To Spider-Man: No Way Home
It's impossible not to see similarities between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: No Way Home. After all, both movies centre around a group of Spideys from different universes, who unite against a common foe that threatens to unravel the multiverse.
Now, that's not suggesting No Way Home ripped off its counterpart. Anyone familiar with Spider-Man lore knows No Way Home drew inspiration from the One More Day storyline, while Into the Spider-Verse was based on the Spider-Verse comic event.
However, the pair could've had even more connections. In an interview with ScreenCrush, the directors said they considered having Tobey Maguire played Peter B. Parker. According to co-director, Rodney Rothman,
"There were many thoughts about where we could put Tobey Maguire and others. I think after this film, those thoughts might have a little more traction. But before this movie, and introducing the idea of the “Spider-Verse” to the audience, I think everybody was afraid that it would just really confuse people. But wow, it would have been fun."
Producer, Christopher Miller, also pushed for Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland to cameo as their Spider-Man variants. However, this concept was ultimately rejected.
We pitched the Sony brass an ambitious tag involving Spider-Ham, Tobey, Andrew, and Tom. They felt it was “too soon”#SpiderVerse #QuarantineWatchParty https://t.co/E91H1eLysr

Based on another script, the film would conclude with a cameo, not of Spider-Man 2099, but of Doctor Strange. If all these alterations were left in, No Way Home wouldn't just resemble Into the Spider-Verse - it would feel like a loose remake.
