6. "Choose Life" Nearly Landed Elsewhere
Few films have ever been able to grab an audiences' attention with quite the same vigour and charm as this adrenaline-fuelled middle-finger to the world did back in '96. Sprinting down a street with police in hot pursuit, Renton quickly begins to string off his often imitated but never quite replicated "Choose Life" monologue.
But long before we were told to "Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments" in that movie-opening set-piece, Boyle and writer John Hodge had actually planned on throwing the monologue into the middle of the feature. However, the pair just couldn't land on how to open this eventual cultural phenomenon, so instead decided to play with lacing "Choose Life" into the opening stages. And lo and behold, a piece of cinema legend was immortalised for eternity.
Thank God they didn't "Choose Middle".
