20 Things You Didn’t Know About Whiplash

15. Andrew Appears In Every Scene

Whiplash JK Simmons
Sony Pictures Classics

One thing that stands out about Whiplash is that its protagonist is in every scene from start to finish. It is possible that this was due to budgetary/logistical constraints, but regardless, it works in the film’s favour as audiences get to experience the new world of Schafer Conservatory alongside Andrew and his descent into obsessing over perfection.

A few months after the movie’s release, one of its deleted scenes was put out for the world to see. In it, Fletcher is seen listening to music in his apartment after a long day at the job. This scene paints the otherwise harsh instructor in a more positive light than his other appearances.

Jason Reitman convinced Damien Chazelle to omit the scene from the final cut as its presence would have distracted from Andrew’s journey and the immersion that came along with it.
