20 Things You Didn't Know About Alien 3
18. CGI Wasn't Used For The Xenomorph
If you take away all the chaos that occurred around Alien³, the film still doesn't really stand on its own merit. The characters aren't likeable, the pacing is slow, and story isn't particularly engaging. But another problem with Alien³ is... the alien. The previous two films utilised a mix of costumes and puppets to bring the Xenomorph to life. With these simple techniques, the SFX team created arguably the coolest looking alien in movie history.
Sadly, the same cannot be said about the extra-terrestrial in Alien³. In this film, the creature looks very janky, especially when it's crawling around. Because it moves so unnaturally, viewers assume the production used CGI on the alien instead of a puppet.
But this is untrue. No CGI was used whatsoever on the Xenomorph (until the Director's Cut). The reason why the snarling acid-blooded beast looks so jittery when it moves around is because the puppet was filmed in front of a blue-screen before being inserted into the shot in post-production. It was nice that the SFX team tried to do something different but it sadly didn't work.
