20 Things You Didn't Know About Blade Runner 2049
11. The Opening Shot Is A REAL Place
As the movie begins, the stunning Roger Deakins cinematography sweeps over the world as we know it in the year 2049. Officer K flies through the air in his LAPD standard issue Spinner craft, over the now heavily industrialised California. The enormous dishes containing multiple mirror units are in fact a real place, albeit with just one 'dish.'
Just outside Seville in Spain, the Gemasolar thermosolar plant, owned by Torresol Energy, is based on designs, ironically, already in use in California, but those are on a much smaller scale.
The plant uses molten salt as a heat and energy transfer system and has been running continuously since 2013. Science fiction becomes science fact.
