20 Things You Didn't Know About Clueless
16. The Wardrobe Budget Was "Only" $200,000
Clueless is fondly remembered for its gorgeous and elaborate costumes, and though this might suggest that a large chunk of the film's $12 million budget was allocated to the wardrobe department, that actually isn't the case at all.
The film's costume designer Mona May aimed to make the female leads look like they'd been trawling the mall for flashy wares rather than kitted out in ridiculously lavish clothes, and so despite featuring 63 different outfits across the main cast, the costume budget was just $200,000.
To be clear, that's less than 2% of the movie's total budget despite being one of its most seminal and iconic components. Not bad.
Unsurprisingly, the single most expensive piece of attire in the entire movie was the yellow plaid Jean Paul Gaultier outfit worn by Cher in the movie's first few scenes.
The entire film used 53 different kinds of plaid and tartan, with Cher alone wearing seven of them.
