20 Things You Didn't Know About Halloween (1978)

16. The Killing Of The Dog

Halloween 1978
Compass International Pictures

The killing of the Wallaces' dog is one of the more unpleasant sequences in Halloween, particularly given that, in the previous scene, the audience learns that Michael has been feeding on a dog when Dr. Loomis and Sheriff Brackett (Charles Cyphers) inspect the Myers House.

The actual way in which the Wallaces' dog is killed is left open to the viewer's interpretation. However, the filming of the scene was comparatively straightforward: a crewmember was holding the dog in his arms and then dropped it.

The film was then slowed down to make it seem as though the unfortunate animal was writhing in agony when, in fact, it had purely been dropped from a comfortable sitting position to a position where it was only being held by its upper body. Readers will be pleased to know that the poor animal survived the filming process.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
