In the years since, many jokes have been made about Matt Damon's similar roles in Interstellar and The Martian - a similarity that's compounded by the fact that both movies hit cinemas just 11 months apart.

Each movie sees Damon assume the role of an astronaut stuck on a barren planet, a funny coincidence the actor himself is well aware of.

In his initial chats with The Martian director Ridley Scott, Damon told him that - because of those Interstellar similarities - he wasn't sure if he could do the movie.

His fears didn't last for long though, because, in response, Scott told him that "Nobody gives a sh*t about that" - and the rest is history.

You can listen to Damon tell this story at the 19:15 mark in the video below...

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
