15. In Case You Couldn't Tell, Richard Matheson Was Probably Drunk
We're harping a little on Matheson here, but mainly because the film really could have been good if they involved him more. By 1983, he had written a large bulk of the best episodes of The Twilight Zone, in addition to The Legend of Hell House and some of the finest Edgar Allen Poe adaptations ever produced.
The shambling vampiric creatures in I Am Legend served as inspiration for George A. Romero's zombies and Stephen King often cites him as a huge influence.
That being said, he was also a notorious problem drinker. His next script was Loose Cannons, co-written with his son Richard Christian, about a brilliant cop with a multiple personality disorder (Dan Aykroyd) partnered with a hard-nosed detective (Gene Hackman) who have to hunt for a gay Hitler sex tape that includes his onscreen assassination by the soon-to-be-Chancellor of Germany.
