Eagle-eyed viewers will see that there are clear references to James Bond’s underwater adventures in Licence to Kill.

Alongside there is a brief battle between James Bond and Milton Krest’s (Anthony Zerbe’s) speargun-toting frogmen, recalling the underwater battle in Thunderball (1965), the submersible used by Karl Stromberg’s (Curd Jürgens’s) divers in The Spy Who Loved Me also reappears.

Used by Franz Sanchez to escape from the DEA and later by both Sanchez and Krest to discreetly access the Wavekrest marine research vessel, the mini-submarine was originally built by Perry Oceanographic, Inc. in Riviera Beach, Florida explicitly for use in the 10th official James Bond film.

The underwater sequences of Sanchez escaping from US custody were filmed off Seven Mile Bridge heading towards Pigeon Key, whilst other underwater scenes (notably Bond infiltrating and then escaping from the Wavekrest) were filmed near Isla Mujeres off the coast of Cancún in Mexico.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
