20 Things You Didn't Know About Mad Max: Fury Road
11. Hardy And Theron Didn’t Always Get On
In casting two actors of such undeniable talent as Hardy and Theron in Fury Road’s lead roles, George Miller must have felt he’d hit the jackpot. However, as per Internet scuttlebutt during the production itself and Theron’s own comments since shooting wrapped, the relationship between the two co-stars was far from harmonious.
A source purportedly on the inside of production was quoted as saying:
“Charlize and Tom are just not getting on together. Professionally, they are doing a wonderful job, but in-between takes Tom likes to stay in character and is constantly talking to himself and mumbling things.”
Hardy, who has publicly denounced method acting and doesn’t favour staying in character off-camera, was confused and disappointed by the reports but Theron has since elaborated on their working relationship:
“We f*ck*ng went at it, yeah. And on other days, he and George went at it. It was the isolation, and the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot. We shot a war movie on a moving truck – there’s very little green screen. It was like a family road trip that just never went anywhere. We never got anywhere. We just drove. We drove into nothingness, and that was maddening sometimes.”
