20 Things You Didn't Know About Near Dark
12. Twilight Put The Kibosh On A Remake
Twilight has a lot to answer for. Sparkly emo daylight vamps are now an unfortunate part of the genre so if you're looking for another reason to throw a dart at the poster, here it is: in 2006, producer Brad Fuller (A Quiet Place) had begun pre-production on a remake of Near Dark, with Samuel Bayer set to direct.
In 2008, Fuller told Empire Magazine that the project had been shelved due to the similarities between Bigelow's human/vampire romance and the teen Twilight puke-a-thon.
"Near Dark is probably not going to happen. I think that Twilight was the same type of thing we were going for although Near Dark was a much darker, sexier, rated R version of that. But I’m concerned that, conceptually, that Near Dark and Twilight are too similar in terms of a vampire movie. For now, that movie is on hold."
Even the 2009 Blu-ray release had a new cover image that shamelessly riffed off Twilight's success. Look familiar?
