In one of Anton Chigurh’s final scenes in the movie, he comes face-to-face with Carla Jean Moss, the wife of Llewelyn Moss whom Chigurh had vowed to kill if he did not get the money.

This scene comes after Llewelyn’s death, which seemingly renders Chigurh’s vow to murder his wife meaningless. However, the psychotic Chigurh has his own unpredictable set of values and pays her a visit regardless.

As he did earlier in the film, Chigurh decides to flip a coin to decide Carla Jean’s fate. However, the result of this coin toss is never revealed and the audience are never explicitly told whether Carla lives or dies, although a subtle hint as Chigurh leaves the house may give us the answer.

It is established earlier on in the film that Chigurh does not like getting blood on him, as seen by him shielding himself with a shower curtain as he shoots one of the Mexicans, or when he lifts his feet onto the bed as Carson Well’s blood slowly runs towards his boots.

As he leaves Carla’s house, Anton stops to check the bottom of his boots. Is this a subtle answer to the fate of Carla Jean Moss?
