Actor Garret Dillahunt played the role of Deputy Wendell in No Country For Old Men, but he almost had a more prominent role in the film.

Dillahunt auditioned for the role of Llewelyn Moss multiple times before the part eventually went to Josh Brolin.

He told The A.V. Club:

“I auditioned for Moss about five times, every time a star fell out”

Dillahnut explained that he is no stranger to this sort of situation and is often called upon when other actors pull out of movies.

Directors Joel and Ethan Coen obviously saw something they liked in Dillahunt but ultimately wanted to cast someone more recognisable in one of their leading roles. However, his efforts were not in vain and he was eventually cast as Wendell.

It may not have been the role he was originally after, but he gave a great supporting performance as the innocently childlike Deputy Wendell and it was a role he did enjoy playing in the end.

“It was nice. I got to be a little bright spot, a little breath for the audience before they plunge into the next atrocity.”
