20 Things You Didn't Know About No Country For Old Men
13. Why Is Kelly MacDonald Here?
Whilst Joel and Ethan Coen always had their heart set on Javier Bardem for the role of Anton Chigurh, it appears as though they were not initially so keen on casting Kelly MacDonald in the role of Carla Jean Moss.
During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, MacDonald explained that her first meeting with the directors was a bit awkward and that the brothers were unsure as to why they were even meeting with her. MacDonald and the Coen brothers just so happened to be in New York at the same time, so the actress’s agent took the opportunity to arrange a meeting.
Of the random meeting, MacDonald said:
“I was obviously not from West Texas or anything they were looking for. So they were just very, like, “You seem very nice… But what’s going on here?” They thought the casting director had gone a bit mad! But then I read a couple of scenes and it all made sense!”
MacDonald eventually got the part of Carla Jean Moss in the film and a Bafta nomination followed, meaning that both parties will surely be grateful that this chance meeting took place.
