The iconic tragicomedy’s title is both straightforward and layered. The Parks and Kims rely on each other in a way that can be considered exploitative and manipulative in the search for personal gain. Despite serving as an excellent title, Parasite was not Bong Joon-ho’s first pick for his impressive cinematic affair.

During development, Parasite was initially titled The Delcalcomanie, a reference to delcalcomania, a decorative transfer technique that involves creating an image on a surface and folding said surface to create a mirror image.

The original title was meant to showcase the seeming similarities between the flick’s two families. Ultimately, Bong noted that their relationship was codependent, and eventually went with Parasite.
