20 Things You Didn't Know About Parasite

3. The Ending’s Grim Realism

As with any good tragicomedy, Parasite’s ending is shocking and provocative in equal measure. After the death of Dong-Ik at the hands of Ki-taek following Da-song’s disastrous birthday, the Kim patriarch hides in the Park family home’s basement from the authorities.

A recovering Ki-Woo makes it clear that he will do anything in his power to save his father but his daydream near the film’s end suggests that it will not be possible to protect his father from imprisonment. This is further reinforced by A Glass of Soju, the end credits song sang by Ki-woo’s actor.

Bong revealed that the solemn melody was initially named 564 Years as this was supposed to be a nod as to how long Ki-woo would need to work to earn the money needed to secure his father’s freedom. It is gut-wrenching, but sadly reflects the plight faced by most members of the working class today.
