20 Things You Didn't Know About Parasite

18. The Film’s Strange Snub At The Golden Globes

Despite the movie essentially sweeping the big awards in the 2019/2020 awards circuit, one prize eluded Parasite on its way to the Oscars. Although it won the Golden Globes for Best Foreign Language Film, it did not win the much-coveted accolade of Best Picture-Drama.

This was due to a HFPA rule that barred features with less than 50% dialogue in English from competing for the glamorous night's big prize.

A slew of film pundits decried the movie’s snub (alongside other favourites from that year such as The Farewell and Pain and Glory) and stated that the HFPA’s outdated rules are ironic (the ‘F’ does stand for ‘Foreign’ after all) and shut out established and emerging exciting filmmaking voices from the non-English speaking world.
