15. Drawing A Line Between The Kims And Parks
Visual symmetry and precision are prominently used in the picture to highlight the minimalist design of the Park family home. The opulent structure was designed to be as modern (and fittingly enough, insufferable) as possible to reflect the Park family’s detachment from the underprivileged environment that defines the Kim family.
This can be seen in the narrative’s use of the house’s lines, with each line acting as more than an unnecessary visual flourish and instead serve as literal boundaries between the two families. As Park patriarch Dong-ik mentions in the film, there is a line that the Kim family cannot cross as they serve their wealthier counterparts.
Additionally, this dehumanizing division reminds Ki-taek and his family that they are meant to be confined to their socio-economic toils even while in the proximity of wealth.
