20 Things You Didn't Know About Parasite
16. The Film's Staged Origins
It is no surprise that most films in their infancy began in different forms such as series or plays, and vice versa. Parasite is no different from such projects, as Bong conceived the picture as a play during post-production on his 2013 dystopic thriller, Snowpiercer.
His friend (a theater actor) suggested that he direct a play and while Bong was up to the task, he struggled to work around the limitations of a stage. While working around this, he kept on imagining what camera positions would look like for scenes set in the play and this eventually led to him committing to the idea of a theatrical feature rather than a stage-based affair.
While a Parasite play would be fascinating to watch (especially if sticks to the original’s spirit), it was probably for the best that the project ultimately became a motion picture.
