14. The Film’s Unexpected Post-Apocalyptic Connection

At first glance, Parasite and Mad Max: Fury Road share almost nothing in common. One film is a dark comedy with a strong critique of capitalist-driven class disparities and the other is a kinetic action masterpiece set in an apocalyptic future.

Despite the surface-level differences, Bong Joon-ho revealed that he was greatly inspired by George Miller’s magnum opus. He pointed out that the movie’s precise visual arrangement, relentless pace and use of plot-relevant background information inspired Parasite’s eventual structure.

This tidbit just goes to show how creative inspiration can come from the most unlikely place and if properly utilized can lead to incredible pieces of art such as Bong’s award-winning masterwork.
