12. Unexpected Thoughts From A Fellow Director

With each year seeing an increasingly large number of films in theatres and on streaming services, it is expected that two completely unrelated efforts would share similar narrative threads, even if it is merely on a conceptual level. This was case with Parasite and Joker, Todd Philips’s reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime.

While the two movies seem to be loosely connected at best, they offer critiques of modern-day society and simply execute their ideas differently. Unsurprisingly, Phillips saw the Korean classic and at the 2020 Critics Choices Awards and told Bong that he experienced a multitude of emotions after watching the film three times.

It is not clear what exactly the director told his counterpart, but Bong’s slight embarrassment (due to easily getting shy) at recalling the incident implies that it was probably far from what he expected.
