Solo was shot by the fantastically talented, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young (Arrival), who made a bold attempt to film Solo in a style that approximated the look of the Original Trilogy of Star Wars movies.

Young worked with Panavision to try and track down vintage lenses that would help replicate that grittier, dirtier look he was hoping to achieve. Ultimately Young adjusted some ARRI Prime DNA lenses by removing their anti-glare coatings and detuning them.

The end result speaks for itself, giving Solo a "truer" aesthetic relative to the originals, even if some audiences used to watching overlit Hollywood movies and TV these days complained that it looked a little too dark. You can't win them all.
