The Wilhelm scream is one of the most iconic, recognisable, and infuriatingly overused sound effects in all of cinema, and prior to Rogue One had appeared in every single Star Wars movie, including The Clone Wars.

But following the release of The Force Awakens, franchise sound editor Matthew Wood decided to "move on" from the cliched, immersion-shattering scream, such that it didn't appear in Rogue One and hasn't been used in a Star Wars film since.

Wood did, however, decide to fill the void by including a new recurring sound effect called "The George," though as of yet hasn't actually confirmed what the sound effect itself is.
