20 Things You Didn't Know About Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

9. European Cuts Of The Movie Were Heavily Edited

All the hand-wringing surrounding the film's violence led to edited versions of TMNT being released in both the UK and Germany.

In the UK, weapons such as the nunchaku were removed through editing, and all uses of the word "ninja" were either omitted or replaced with "hero" as per the prior animated TV series. The original US cut finally hit home video in the UK in 2004.

The German release is extremely similar to the UK cut, but also includes more cartoonish sound effects to further lessen the impact of the violence in the action sequences.

Hilariously, though, when the film came to DVD in unedited form in Germany, the cartoon-style sound effects had to be retained also because no master version of the original German dubbing existed.
