Given that TMNT's stratospheric box office success was leagues ahead of what just about anyone expected, it's no surprise at all that New Line Cinema pushed ahead with a sequel immediately.

As a result, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze ended up releasing barely less than a year after the first film, shot with a budget almost double the size of the first and impressively hitting cinemas not even four months after principal photography had wrapped.

Despite being a solid box office hit, the sequel nevertheless grossed significantly less than its predecessor, likely resulting in the third film having its budget lowered to $21 million, which it only scarcely managed to double.
