Just two years later, Judd Apatow released the even more successful rom-com Knocked Up, which was actually originally envisioned as a sequel to The 40-Year-Old Virgin with most of the original cast returning.

In the end, however, Apatow decided that the premise was ultimately better suited as a standalone film, and he consequently abandoned plans for a follow-up to this hit movie.

Sadly the filmmaker has never spoken at length about the original setup for Knocked Up as a sequel to The 40-Year-Old Virgin, though it's fairly likely it would've focused on Andy and Trish getting unexpectedly pregnant in middle-age.

Apatow did, however, eventually release a spin-off sequel to Knocked Up itself, This Is 40, in 2012.
