When Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez decided that they were going to make what would become known as The Blair Witch Project, the initial best that the pair were hoping for was that the film would end up as a movie that would run on cable TV.

Once the film was nearing competition, a first cut was shown to test audiences at small festivals in order to get feedback and make the movie more appealing to a larger market. Even then, the hope was still that the film would be picked up for a TV airing.

Instead, so popular did this early cut of the movie become, it was decided to enter the movie into the 1999 edition of Sundance Film Festival. From there, the midnight premiere of the picture saw Artisan Entertainment instantly pick up the distribution rights for a cool $1.1 million.
