Interestingly, for a director famous for making some of the most famous westerns of all time, Sergio Leone could barely speak a word of English at the time of The Good, The Bad And The Ugly's production. For his previous work with Clint Eastwood, he had relied on using an interpreter.

However, both Leone and Eli Wallach could speak French - and as Wallach could not speak any Italian, this was their chosen method of communication. An American actor and an Italian director speaking French together in their work on an American Civil War epic just sounds like the perfect melting pot.
