20 Things You Didn't Know About The Ring

10. The Meaning Of The Ring

Samara The Ring
Dreamworks

One of the major differences between the US remake and its Japanese counterpart is the interpretation of the title 'ring.' In the original film, ring was purely thematic - it represents the cyclic nature of the curse; copying the tape and spreading the virus completes the circle. The books were titled Ring, Spiral and Loop, reflecting the nature of the curse.

A common misconception is that the word ring somehow relates to the phone ringing after seeing the video but this is erroneous.

The biggest clue comes in the line "before you die you see the ring." As Samara is thrown down the well, the last daylight she will ever see is the 'ring' formed as her mother seals the well with a lid, forming a circle above.
