14. The Lighthouse
Samara Morgan, the creepy antagonist, was raised and murdered on Moesko Island Lighthouse, a fictional location but a real lighthouse with a story of its own.
The real place is Newport, Oregon and the lighthouse is named Yaquina Head Lighthouse. According to local legend, around the turn of the twentieth century a group of teenagers explored the deserted tower, when one of the group, Muriel, returned to find her lost handkerchief. She was never seen again, save for the hankie, which was found covered in blood. Apparently her ghost has been frequently spotted there ever since.
The filmmakers decided to cash in on this and a fake website was set up for Moesko lighthouse. Look closely, Anna Morgan, Samara's adopted mother, can be seen in the photo.
