20 Things You Didn't Know About The World Is Not Enough (1999)

9. Crystal Clear Bosphorus

The underwater sequences of the film depicting the nuclear submarine nose-diving onto the seabed of The Bosphorus and the subsequent escape of James Bond and nuclear physicist, Dr. Christmas Jones was, of course, not actually shot to scale. In fact, it was actually filmed by the special effects team and the second unit in The Bahamas using a 45-foot long miniature of the submarine and stunt performers.

Ever since Thunderball (1965), The Bahamas have almost always been the go-to location for the Bond filmmakers and for many other film productions that have shared key crew members with the Double-0 Seven features when they have needed to shoot in the crystal clear waters.

For instance, the Bond team returned to Nassau for filming in You Only Live Twice (1967), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), For Your Eyes Only (1981), this film, and Casino Royale (2006).

When they have used miniature effects in The Bahamas, the Bond team have often left the miniatures in situ - such as the Vulcan bomber in Thunderball and The Liparus supertanker in The Spy Who Loved Me - to become part of the coral reef below the surface.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
