20 Things You Didn't Know About Waterworld
5. The Underwater City Is Actually Denver, Colorado
One of Waterworld's most memorable scenes sees the Mariner briefly visiting the remnants of an underwater city. The sequence was largely achieved by taking raw footage of modern day Denver, Colorado and digitally altering it beyond recognition.
The results are pretty much seamless for the most part, though those familiar with Denver will surely notice the presence of the Wells Fargo Center, which is locally referred to as the "Cash Register Building" for its distinctive shape.
This is slightly awkward for the film, given that Denver sits at a mile above sea level, basically making it physically impossible for the city to be so far underwater.
