12. Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Played Patrick Bateman
In retrospect, Christian Bale was the perfect choice for the role of sociopath and serial killer Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho. With his physique, chiseled face, and his dedication it’s difficult to picture the movie without Bale as the lead.
But once upon a time, Leonardo DiCaprio was hired for the role of Bateman – after becoming the It boy in 1997 with Titanic, every studio in town had DiCaprio on their wishlist. While Harron never doubted DiCaprio as an actor (or saw the studio's goals as anything more devious than wanting to make a successful film), she was a bit wary about how the film would play with a breakout heartthrob as a sociopathic serial killer. In the late 90’s, DiCaprio was arguably the biggest young star in Hollywood and had teenage girls everywhere on the verge of hyperventilation.
Production proceeded but after protests from feminist groups, and issues with the script, DiCaprio walked and Bale was more than eager to step in. Needless to say, he didn’t disappoint.
